Michael Forbes Boatcare + Yotspot

The Trust first supported ‘MIF’ with a grant to expand his ‘boat babysitting’ service in 2008. Subsequently, the business grew further to include a chandlery and yacht brokerage, complementing the existing successful maintenance service employing an increasing number of people, including his elderly father. More recently, the company has moved away from Creran Marine boatyard to Oban from where MIF is concentrating on the development of an exciting new venture – Yotspot. This new business will provide users of the Crinan Canal with showering and washing facilities alongside a restaurant/cafe and chandlery shop converted from the old ferry terminal building in Ardrishaig. Once it is up and running, a talented cook/manager will run it for him while he continues to operate the boat babysitting service in several locations along the coast from the Oban HQ as well as an increasing amount of yacht brokerage. He now has four full-time employees, plus a young apprentice, learning the servicing as well as the refurbishment side of the business through the in-house 18 month Boat Babysitter course. He feels the change of location has breathed new life into the business.
